A History of the Central Coast Weavers

January 11, 1962: Cora V. Kyle gathered nine other central coast weavers at the Morro Bay home of Marcelline Baxter. At that meeting, the Central Coastal Handweavers Guild was informally organized and Cora was named the first president.

September, 1962: The group, now 23 strong, was formally organized with Mrs. Baxter as president. The stated purpose of the the group was "for discussion of weaving problems, the exchange of patterns and techniques, and to promote handweaving".

March, 1966: The fledgling Guild participated in the fifth biennial Conference of the Southern California Handweavers in Bakersfield.

April, 1970: The Central Coastal Handweavers Guild became a charter affiliate of the Handweavers Guild of America.

... 1972: Some members are branching out into spinning and dyeing.

... 1973: Members are demonstrating handweaving at local schools and the San Luis Obispo Art Association.

... 1976: Two Members, Lucy Haenke and Joan Walker, are each awarded the Certificate of Excellence in Handweaving from the Handweavers Guild of America.

... 1976 The Guild mounts its first public show, "Fiberworks", at Hancock College in Santa Maria.

... 1978 Odessa Vasquez organizes a spinning group that begins meeting regularly in member’s homes.  The first Guild "Spin-in" was held in June.  Guild members demonstrate at the MId-State Fair for the first time.
